Outline
how I became a technical writer
and the story behind my career change
01
stability

For years, I was an office administrator. I loved my job and made people shine. I’m not one for the spotlight, but I like being a part of the whole production!
Whether I was updating documents, copyediting policies, or designing user guides, I saw how clear and accurate documentation could make a real difference—and I carry that passion for problem-solving into my career as a technical writer.
disruption
02
Mid-career, my life changed when I married an active-duty military member, and we relocated every two to three years as orders demanded. My career shifted to a mix of temporary administrative roles and occasional freelance projects, many with a focus on improving documentation.
My favorite role during this time was working with an HR Director to streamline their documentation system—a project that solidified my passion for creating clear, effective processes. These experiences, though few and far between, laid the groundwork for my transition into technical writing.

03
opportunity

Once my spouse retired and we settled in North Texas, I decided it was time to re-focus on my own goals. I chose to pursue a BBA in Human Resource Management because I had enjoyed my time working in an HR department, and it seemed like the perfect fit.
While the degree deepened my understanding of organizational processes, it was the technical writing certificate I added that truly lit a spark. I discovered just how much I love turning complex information into clear, impactful communication. Little did I realize, THAT would become my true calling.
reemergence
04
Now, I’ve completed my MA in technical communication, and have skills that combine creativity, strategy, and precision. I’ve gained expertise in writing, editing, and document design, while also delving into content strategy, usability, and information architecture. I create polished, user-centered materials that bring order to complexity.
My areas of focus are editing, document design, and information architecture because they allow me to combine my love of detail with my creative side. Whether it’s refining text to enhance clarity, designing visually appealing layouts, or organizing content into intuitive structures, I just want to make information accessible and engaging, and help users and organizations succeed.
